On a widely subscribed academic list, the Sociology of Islam, one may read frequent posts by Dr. Alain Gabon reviling President Sisi. Colleagues unfamiliar with Egypt who read Western language media have a very flawed picture of the most pressing issues in the country as a result of editorial bias. In attempting to rebut Gabon, and in visiting different university campuses in the U.S. I realized that many – and not only Americans — are unaware of the very real acts of terrorism now perpetrated on a daily basis in Egypt by supporters of ex-President Morsi. Many are militants to whom the political process is irrelevant; their aim is destabilization. Hardly any western media cover the issue; if they do, the only analysis offered is that the Sinai campaign is “too harsh,” or they insist that the Muslim Brotherhood “must be re-included” as per the position of the New York Times and Washington Post’s editorial board. Only Egyptians and those who have followed the terrorist/militant groups in the Sinai since their emergence c. 2004, realize that the militants in the Sinai proliferated during President Morsi’s term, have multiplied due to external factors, and that connections to Gaza, Libya, Sudan and elsewhere render the Sinai terrorism a regional issue, and not only a local one. I am waiting to read a serious article about the funding of these groups (or I will attempt to write one). Then, there is the violence on the mainland, and so many incidents of IEDs or defused bombs that it is impossible to log them on a casual basis – but this will give you a snippet of these events.
